first_img May 1, 2005 Regular News Board to make appointments in June Board to make appointments in Junecenter_img The Board of Governors is seeking applicants for the following vacancies to be filled during its June meeting: ABA House of Delegates: Three lawyers to serve two-year terms and one lawyer to serve one-year term commencing at the conclusion of the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago. Applicants must also be ABA members. Florida Legal Services, Inc. Board of Directors: Six lawyers to serve two-year terms on this is a 21-member board, commencing July 1, 2005. Florida Legal Services provides judicial advocacy through co-counseling with local program attorneys and volunteer pro bono attorneys and provides legislative and administrative advocacy on policies impacting the legal rights of the poor, as well as providing civil legal assistance to indigent persons who would not otherwise have the means to obtain a lawyer. Florida Lawyers Assistance, Inc. Board of Directors: Three lawyers and two non-lawyers to serve three-year terms commencing July 1, 2005. (Note: an earlier version of this notice mistakenly said five lawyers were needed to fill these positions.) This 15-member Board assists the legal community in securing counseling and treatment for emotional and chemical dependency problems for lawyers. Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission: One attorney to serve remainder of a six-year term expiring December 31, 2006, on the 15-member commission, authorized under Article V, Section 12, Florida Constitution, to investigate complaints against judges whose conduct demonstrates a present unfitness to hold office and could recommend disciplinary action to the Supreme Court. No member of the commission, except a judge, shall be eligible for state judicial office while acting as a member of the commission and for a period of two years thereafter. No member of the commission shall hold office in a political party or participate in any campaign for judicial office or hold office; provided that a judge may campaign for judicial office and hold that office. Statewide Nominating Commission for Compensation Claims Judges: Two attorneys from the territorial jurisdiction of the 2nd and 4th state appellate districts to serve 4-year terms commencing July 1, 2005. All applicants must be members of the Bar who are engaged in the practice of law. No attorney who appears before any Judge of Compensation Claims more than 4 times a year is eligible to serve on the Commission, pursuant to Section 440.45(2)(b), F.S. Commissioners are also not eligible for state judicial vacancies filled by the JNC on which they sit for two years following the expiration of their term. Commissioners are subject to Florida financial disclosure laws. Completed applications must be received by the Executive Director of The Florida Bar no later than 5:30 p.m. May 6. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of the required application.
