Maria is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected through Thursday night.A turn toward the north-northwest is forecast on Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Maria will continue to move away from the northwestern coast of Puerto Rico this evening. The center will then pass offshore of the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic tonight and Thursday and then move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas Thursday night and Friday.Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next day or two,and Maria could regain major hurricane status by Thursday.Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from thecenter, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150miles (240 km).The minimum central pressure based on data from the Air Forceaircraft is 957 mb (28.26 inches).HAZARDS AFFECTING LANDWIND: Hurricane and tropical storm conditions are still occurring over portions of Puerto Rico. Tropical storm conditions are spreading across the warning areas in the Dominican Republic, and hurricane conditions should start in the hurricane warning area tonight. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday, with hurricane conditions starting Thursday night.STORM SURGE: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water is expected to reach the following heights above ground if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide…Puerto Rico…3 to 5 ftThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast in areas of onshore wind over western portions of Puerto Rico, where the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances. For information specific to your area, please see products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office.A dangerous storm surge accompanied by large and destructive waves will raise water levels by as much as 4 to 6 feet above normal tide levels in the hurricane warning area in the Dominican Republic, and 1 to 3 ft elsewhere along the northern coasts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.A dangerous storm surge accompanied by large and destructive waves will raise water levels by as much as 9 to 12 feet above normal tide levels within the hurricane warning area of the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.RAINFALL: Maria is expected to produce the following rainfall totals through Friday:Puerto Rico…20 to 25 inches, isolated 35 inches U.S. and British Virgin Islands…additional 3 to 5 inches Northern and eastern Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and southeast Bahamas…8 to 16 inches, isolated 20 inches Northern Haiti…2 to 4 inchesRainfall on these islands will cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslidesSURF: Swells generated by Maria are affecting the Leeward Islands,Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These swells will begin affecting the northern coast of Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Southeastern Bahamas during the next day or two. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. John McAfee has apparently gone missing. Screenshot by Sean Hollister/CNET John McAfee has apparently gone missing and is believed to have been detained by authorities, according to a series of tweets Tuesday from the Twitter account of the 2020 presidential candidate and maker of an “unhackable” cryptocurrency wallet. Operating McAfee’s Twitter account, his campaign manager Rob Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Loggia-Ramirez said data hidden across the world by McAfee will be revealed if he remains detained. The antivirus software pioneer has been on the run since 2012 after his alleged involvement in a murder in Belize, which he denies. McAfee last week tweeted his only “crime is not filing tax returns.” He claims the rest of the charges against him is “propaganda by the US government to silence me.” “I have good reason to suspect that John McAfee, @theemrsmcafee and other companions have been detained by authorities at their latest port of call,” Loggia-Ramirez tweeted on McAfee’s account Tuesday. “If John misses his next check-in, events will be set into motion that I cannot prevent once they have begun. John has secreted data with individuals across the world. I know neither their identities or locations. They will release their payloads if John goes missing.” Loggia-Ramirez told CNET he has no more information about the detainment, but that he and others are “employing every possible resource to locate him and secure his release.” “The bastards wouldn’t even give him a cigarette,” Loggia-Ramirez tweeted. The Twitter thread didn’t say when McAfee’s next check-in was scheduled. On July 19, McAfee had tweeted that the CIA “attempted to collect us.” “We are at sea now and will report more soon. I will continue to be dark for the next few days,” he tweeted with a picture of himself and his wife holding guns. On July 22, McAfee then tweeted about being at sea in rough weather for four and a half days. “Nearing port. All is well. Will be back in the saddle shortly,” he said. Loggia-Ramirez told CNET later Tuesday that he could not share the plans or timeline for the release of the secreted data across the world. “I can say that our response has been pre-coordinated in the event something like this happened, and it that has many moving pieces involving people unaware of each other,” he said in a private Twitter message. “John is not stupid.” Loggia-Ramirez sent three additional tweets from McAfee’s account later on Tuesday, thanking people for their support and emphasizing that this is not a stunt.”There are also some people that doubt the veracity of today’s report. That is fair enough and can be forgiven. But you will find you are mistaken – this is not a publicity stunt,” he tweeted. (2/4) I last spoke with John as his boat was being boarded. Google DoodleGoogle on Tuesday celebrated the 246th birth anniversary of renowned social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy recognised as the “Father of the Indian Renaissance”, who paved the way for a modern India.Roy was a non-conformist to many a tradition he was born into on this day in 1772, in Radhanagar village in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.Although born into a Hindu Brahmin family, where his father Ramkanto Roy, was a Vaishnavite, Roy at a young age left home, shunned orthodox rituals and idol worship and became a staunch supporter of monotheism.Following his differences with his father, Roy went on a journey that took him far from his roots. He travelled extensively including in Tibet and the Himalayas. He studied Persian and Arabic along with Sanskrit, which influenced his thinking about God. He read Upanishads, Vedas and the Quran and translated a lot of the scriptures into English. When he returned home, his parents married him off in a bid to change his outlook. But Roy continued to explore the depths of Hinduism only to highlight its hypocrisy. After his father’s death in 1803 he moved to Murshidabad, where he published his first book Tuhfat-ul-Muwahhidin (A Gift to Monotheism).Roy took a keen interest in European politics and followed the course of the French Revolution. In 1814, he settled in Calcutta, and the following year he founded the Atmiya Sabha. In 1828, he established the Brahmo Samaj, which is considered to be one of India’s first socio-religious reform movements. However, his most significant contribution as a social engineer was towards women’s rights. Nearly 200 years ago, when evils like-Sati-plagued the society, Roy played a critical role to bring about a change. He opposed the regressive practice that forced a widow to immolate herself on husband’s pyre. The doodle on Roy, created by Beena Mistry, a designer based out of Toronto, shows Roy speaking at a public meeting with his detractors in the background. There is also the presence of a woman among the audience, this is at a time when the purdah system was rigidly followed. He campaigned for equal rights for women, including the right to remarry and the right to hold property. In 1830, he travelled to the UK as the Mughal Empire’s envoy to ensure that Lord William Bentinck’s law banning the practice of Sati was not overturned.Roy was also one of the pioneers of Indian journalism. He published several journals in Bengali, Persian, Hindi and English to propagate social reforms.Bengali weekly Samvad Kaumudi was the most important journal that he published. The Atmiya Sabha published an English weekly called the Bengal Gazette and a Persian newspaper called Miratul-Akbar.Roy died in a village near Bristol in England on 26 September 1833 of meningitis, and was buried there.

By Hamil R. Harris, Special to the AFROA coalition of African-American pastors announced its support for Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. This proclamation comes at a time when some of the state’s top Democratic veterans privately say Ben Jealous is losing ground in his bid to unseat the Republican governor, even during the era of President Donald Trump.Baltimore and Prince George’s County are critical for any chances of Jealous winning and this is why the endorsement of a number of prominent pastors is a political body blow to the former President and CEO of the NAACP. Further two of the pastors are leaders in the Progressive National Baptist Convention, which was formed by pastors aligned with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.Black Pastors such as the Rev. Anthony Maclin of the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square in Prince George’s County are supporting Maryland’s Governor Larry Hogan (R) who is running against Democrat and former NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous.“The gubernatorial leadership of Governor Hogan for our great state has been, and continues to be, insightful, thoughtful and respectful,” said the Rev. Dr. Harold Carter Jr. of the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Baltimore, according to a statement released by the Hogan campaign. “His administration has been one of inclusivity and stability. We are the better for what he, along with Lt. Gov. Rutherford, bring to the table.”The Rev. Anthony Maclin, pastor of the Sanctuary at Kingdom Square, in Capital Heights, Md., is also supporting Hogan and said in a statement, “This governor has brought people together, reaching across political lines for the betterment of the people of the great state of Maryland.”The endorsement of these pastors came during a time where Jealous is being seen at major African American events such as the Morgan State Homecoming last weekend and the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce Gala at National Harbor. Privately, at both venues, leaders say Jealous is losing to Hogan in terms of a good ground game and African Americans like what Hogan has done.In terms of the faith community the pastors supporting Hogan are major players.“The Hogan/Rutherford team has proven to be thoughtful leaders,” said the Rev. Dr. Alvin Hathaway Sr., pastor of Baltimore’s Union Baptist Church. “I’ve found them willing to listen, debate and collaborate. These are the skills needed in this highly partisan climate. Together we are planning major changes in the west Baltimore community I serve.”The Rev. Dr. Calvin Baltimore of the Peoples Community Church in Silver Spring, Md., said, “These men are giving Maryland stellar leadership. I and other ministers and friends will be supporting these great men for re-election.”In addition to touting $25 billion for K-12 education, including $3.8 billion for Baltimore City, Hogan said in a statement that his administration, “has also taken strong action and spoken out against hatred and divisiveness in Maryland,” and has allocated money to improve security passed laws to strengthen hate crime laws.In terms of the endorsement, Hogan said in a statement, “These pastors are pillars of their communities and it is a privilege and an honor to receive their support.“I have been grateful to receive their wisdom and moral guidance during my first term. I look forward to working with them as we continue changing Maryland for the better.”Rutherford, another key to Hogan’s support, said, “Our administration has made building strong communities throughout Maryland a top priority, and these pastors have been vital allies in that effort.”
By Mark F. Gray, AFRO Staff Writer, email@example.comThe Hyattsville/ Landover alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity has been one of the most impactful in its community since its inception in 1979. Their 40th anniversary provided them with an opportunity to laud those who were pillars in the foundation and who have helped it become one of the most influential chapters in the nation during the ceremony at the Hotel at the University of Maryland in College Park.As a chapter that began much like a startup company, Hyattsville/ Landover has leveraged the professional success of its brothers to form the direction of its vision. It is also a chapter that gained political capital through its four decades of community service. During its 40 year existence they have remained committed to the youth of Prince George’s County through a “strong organizational foundation that serves both the community and provides programs for youth,” says 18th Chapter Polemarch Michael K. Pitts. The Hyattsville/ Landover alumni chapter of Kappy Alpha Psi Fraternity celebrated its 40th anniversary with a ceremony at the Hotel at the University of Maryland in College Park. (Courtesy Photo)This chapter’s local influence has been noteworthy through various initiatives that began without fanfare and remains behind a silhouette of the many lives it has touched. High school students in Prince George’s County have benefitted from the chapter’s Guide Right Program, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) preparation and financial aid workshops. The progressive vision of the chapter has been an example for others throughout the fraternity nationwide.“Our achievements over the last four decades demonstrate how the chapter established a paradigm for community service for fraternities and sororities I Prince George’s County,” says Clarence Jones, the chapter’s historian and chairman of the 40th anniversary of the Awards Planning and Celebration Committee. “We crossed a mediocre threshold, creating a new threshold and a new threshold of helping others. These four decades tell the story of how a new era of in community service began to take hold.”During a, sometimes, emotional evening among the brotherhood, laughs and spirits flowed with memories and camaraderie they forged through the years of its volunteer work in Prince George’s County. The chapter’s precedent was acknowledged for how it’s standard has raised the bar for other alumni chapters around the country. This chapter has been noted for being at the forefront of supporting Kappa Alpha Psi’s national level and has been supportive all around in working with the divine nine. which is the consortium of Black Greek fraternities and sororities.Thomas L. Battles, Jr., the 33rd Grand Polemarch of the national organization, was the keynote speaker and gave credit to this local alumni chapter for evolving from its humble beginning, where it gave men who were interested a chance to pledge to become a member of the vanguard of civic impact. The men of the Hyattsville/ Landover alumni chapter developed much of the mentoring programming that many national undergraduate and graduate chapters utilize regularly.“This chapter has been at the front of young and old training for leadership,” Battles Jr. said. “We have always been able to count on the Hyattsville/ Landover alumni chapter to support what we are trying to accomplish through our work in conjunction with the divine nine.”Battles, Jr. also challenged the chapter to continue its leadership in mentoring, especially leading up to the 2020 presidential elections. While he and the rest of the leaders of the divine nine are moving towards establishing a political action committee to ensure that challenges facing HBCU’s, he was resolute about equipping a new generation with skills necessary to advocate for themselves and to try to change the direction of the country.“We’ve got to teach kids how to tell their story,” Battles, Jr. said. “Kids are dying these days because they can’t express themselves to authorities.”
Physicists at the University of Pierre & Marie Curie Physiques Laboratory in Paris have developed a general theory that allows accurate evaluation of the mean First Passage Time, (FTP) in complex media. The lead scientist, S. Condamin, O. Benichou, V. Trejedor, and R. Voituriez in Paris combined efforts with J. Klafter of Tel Aviv University in Israel to accurately assess FTP in complex situations, heretofore the calculation was based on one dimensional geometries or to higher spatial dimensions in homogeneous media. The importance of calculating FTP can best be understood as pondering the question, “How long does it take a random walker to reach a given target.” The FTP is critical in assessing and predicting spreading of disease, neuron firing dynamics, and transport of disordered media. Over the past decades scientists from various disciplines have studied and researched the predictability of FTP .The title of the Letter report is entitled, First Passage Times in Complex Scale Invariant Media was published in Nature 450, at pages 77-80 on November 1, 2007. The scientists state that they have developed an analytical approach that provides a universal scaling dependence of the mean FTP on both the volume of the confining domain and the source-target distance. The scientists have performed various numerical simulation tests for representative models of disordered media, fractals, anomalous diffusion, and scale-free networks. The results of their research is applicable to a broad range of stochastic processes characterized by length, scale invariant properties.
