Hereditary Breast Cancer Are You at Risk

first_img Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, TCI, November 8, 2016 – For about five to ten percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer, hereditary factors are the root cause. In fact, having a first-degree (mother, sister, daughter) relative with breast cancer, increases the potential that you are carrying a mutated breast cancer gene.   And, women who inherit a gene mutation have a much higher risk of developing breast cancer.A gene can often harbor an abnormality that changes how the cell works or responds to its environment. According to Sara Carroll, genetic counselor at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “the most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene.”  There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent.BRCA genes help to correct DNA damage. In people with a mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2, the ability to repair damage is impaired and can sometimes lead to breast cancer.  This suggests an estimated 87% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, which begins to steeply rise at the age of 30. The risk of developing breast cancer by the age of 50 is approximately 50%.There are several factors that can suggest the possibility that hereditary breast cancer runs in your family. You should be concerned if:There is both breast and ovarian cancer in your family.Diagnosis of breast cancer has occurred before age 50.Diagnosis of bilateral breast cancer (cancer in both breasts).Ask about genetic counseling if you are concerned, or call for a risk assessment appointment if you are unsure. High-risk women can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. “Genetic testing can be beneficial in determining whether a cancer diagnosis was random or the result of an inherited mutation,” says Ms. Carroll.  This is valuable information, as there may also be an increased risk for other cancers as well.  Your family members will also benefit from discovering whether a hereditary risk exists. At the genetic counseling visit, a personal and detailed family medical history will be obtained.  Depending what your hereditary risk factors are, we can determine whether or not genetic testing is appropriate, and which genetic changes to assess.  Genetic testing involves a blood test, and the results are typically known in a few weeks. Hereditary risk assessment and genetic testing have become tools in the personalization of breast cancer treatment, by providing a basic understanding of the structure and function of genes at a molecular level. This knowledge allows the best clinical management to be determined.  In some instances, additional breast cancer risk management options may be necessary.  Tell your doctor about your family history of breast cancer and discuss whether that history might support the consideration of changes to your care. The Breast Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida is fully accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a designation given to centers that are committed to providing the highest quality breast care. The breast cancer team provides the most up-to-date information on the genetic components of breast cancer, and offers predictive testing for family members who may have inherited a specific genetic mutation.“Understanding the increased genetic risk enables you to evaluate your options in advance.  Working with our breast cancer care team, you can create a personalized plan, designed to prevent or detect cancer at an earlier and more treatable stage,” states Ms. Carroll.  Women can be empowered to make important health decisions, armed with the knowledge of their genetic breast cancer risk.last_img read more

Wipro Q3 earnings in focus after upbeat Infosys results

first_imgWith Infosys’ Q3 earnings beating the Street’s estimates, the focus now turns to Wipro results, which will be released on 18 January. While it is widely expected that Wipro — India’s third largest IT firm — will not be able to spring any surprise in its revenue growth for the December quarter, investors may look for impact of Chennai floods on its income.India’s third largest IT firm Wipro also gave a similar warning about its Q3 earnings following floods in Chennai. The company had said that increase in costs due to deployment of business continuity plans would impact revenues and operating margins for the quarter ended December 2015.The Bengaluru-based IT giant is expected to post a 0.5% growth in dollar revenue for the October-December quarter on a sequential basis, according to an analysts’ poll conducted by CNBC-TV18.Wipro’s dollar revenue stood at $1,831.9 million in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.In constant currency terms, dollar revenue is likely to come at around 1-1.2% against guidance of 0.5-2.5% ($1841-1878 million), due to Chennai floods’ impact witnessed in December last year.Wipro has a headcount of about 22,000 people in its facilities in Chennai.”Revenues from our IT Services business are expected to be in the previously communicated range of $1,841 million to $1,878 million; However, we expect revenues to be in the lower half of the guidance range,” the company had said in the statement.Analysts expect the acquisition of Designit to slightly contribute to Wipro’s revenues in the third quarter. Wipro had acquired Designit, a Denmark-based global strategic design firm, in July last year to improve its income from the emerging digital vertical. In rupee terms, Wipro’s Q3 revenue is expected to increase by 2.7% to Rs 12,371 crore compared to Rs 12,042.8 crore in the September quarter. However, a depreciation in rupee during the quarter is expected to partly offset the impact of Chennai floods on its margins.last_img read more

Bittersweet surplus Farmers governments in crisis as sugar output surges

first_imgIndia’s surging sugar production is turning out to be bitter news for sugar producers and governments in sugar-producing states. The nation is set to overtake Brazil as the biggest producer of the sweet commodity with the production pegged at more than 35.5 million tonnes in 2019 financial year. Brazil’s production is estimated at 32.5 million tonnes.Farmers in general and sugar farmers, in particular, are up in arms demanding relief measures in many states including Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, media reports say.A meeting on Thursday between sugar factory owners and Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who was looking for a solution to farmers’ agitation demanding a higher price for sugarcane and release of the arrears for the sugarcane already supplied, failed to reach a resolution. The farmer leaders have said they will continue the agitation until the millers meet their demands. The sugar factory owners took the stand that they would pay the government-announced Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for this year, but many were unwilling to fulfil their ex-field commitment (agreement made with farmers promising rates above FRP), which they claim add up to Rs 450 crore. Mill owners have now sought more time to settle the matter. There were indications that the talks remained inconclusive and the millers wanted to talk directly to the farmers.Export ordersIndia has sought to get back to the export market for the first time in three years to bolster the prices. The country is exploring exports to China as a new market.Sugar millers in Mumbai have signed contracts to supply sugar to New York dealers, which have threatened the margins of Brazilian and Australian traders, a news report said. In March, India wanted the mills to export 2 million tonnes of sugar in order the reduce the inventory buildup. Though the authorities fixed mandatory export targets for each mill, the mills together managed to export only around 450,000 tonnes in the 2017-18 market year that ended on September 30 due to the uncompetitive prices, according to the millers’ trade body Indian Sugar Mills Association. The current year target is 5 million tonnes, which looks difficult to achieve, given the current price situation and bumper harvest in most producing nations.
