Ben Fox Rubin/CNET Some powerful New Yorkers are trying to get Amazon to bring back HQ2.The New York Times reported Thursday that an open letter will be published in the Times on Friday that asks Amazon to reconsider its decision to walk away from its plan to build a 25,000-employee campus in Long Island City, Queens. The company pulled the plug on the project, dubbed HQ2, following vocal and persistent opposition to the plan after it was announced three months ago.The letter was signed by the CEOs of Mastercard, Warby Parker, Goldman Sachs, Tishman Speyer and Jetblue, among others. The presidents of the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater New York and state AFL-CIO, which were expecting thousands of construction jobs to come from the project, also signed, as did US Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Carolyn Maloney.”We know the public debate that followed the announcement of the Long Island City project was rough and not very welcoming,” the letter stated. “Opinions are strong in New York — sometimes strident. We consider it part of the New York charm! But when we commit to a project as important as this, we figure out how to get it done in a way that works for everyone.”New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also had several conversations with Amazon, including CEO Jeff Bezos, about bringing back the project, the Times said.The letter and Cuomo’s behind-the-scenes efforts are part of the latest fallout since Amazon abandoned HQ2 in New York. The opposition has celebrated the exit as a victory for grassroots campaigns and a stand against lavish government incentives for new development plans. Amazon was slated to get about $3 billion in tax breaks for building the project. Supporters, who weren’t as vocal during the run-up to Amazon leaving, expressed shock and consternation about Amazon’s decision and worried that New York would appear unfriendly to new businesses.While the business community was broadly seen as in favor of the project, the letter shows how both the camps supporting and opposing HQ2 included unions and Democratic US congress members. Unlike Jeffries and Maloney, US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke against the HQ2 plan. Amazon declined to comment for this story, but the Times said Thursday that “Amazon executives gave no sense that it would reconsider.”The company is moving forward with the other half of the HQ2 project, which will be located in Arlington, Virginia. It’s not that many. To be honest, I don’t read many of the mentions on Twitter because there’s normally quite a bit of hate. Bending the norm on nanowires Scientists have discovered how to align silver nanowires in a controlled manner with an electric field. Their technique offers a possible route to sculpting and writing on nanowires, an ability that will likely have applications in industrial manufacturing. This property enabled a team of scientists from the Tsinghua University P.R. China to observe that a direct current electric field can align one-dimensional, 60 nm-diameter silver nanowires. The ability to control silver nanowire alignment will likely lead to the development of nanoelectronics as well as nanoscale photonic structures.“This is the first time an electric field has been used to align silver nanowires,” Jialin Sun, coauthor of the paper recently published in Nanotechnology, told PhysOrg.com. “The high quality alignment of nanowires can help form optimal nanoscale optoelectronic devices with periodic structure.”The electric field-alignment technique works because of the fact that the silver compound used by the scientists is a solid electrolyte at room temperature. As an electrolyte, silver ions can roam freely, and diverge from their crystalline lattices. So when the scientists applied an electric field, the disordered silver ions were free to align themselves under the field.The study also found that the degree of alignment increased with an increase of the electric field strength. The series of images above, taken by a scanning electron microscope, shows the effect of progressive electric field strengths on a bundle of silver nanowires. In the experiment, the silver ions tended to migrate along the direction of the current, causing the nanowires to “grow” parallel to the direction opposite the current. In the case of the strongest (400 V m-1) electric field, the nanowire bundle clustered into a dense, sheet-like structure. In fact, the nanowires actually became denser after the applied electric field, further enhancing their usability for nanoelectronics applications.“The alignment of nanowires can be effectively controlled by adjusting the applied DCEF [direct current electric field] strength between the two electrodes, and improved by increasing the DCEF strength,” the scientists wrote.In addition to the novelty, this method’s ease of preparation has smoothed the road toward prospective applications. Because the electric field-alignment technique can occur at room temperature, at normal atmospheric pressure and without any complicated and collapsible templates, the method has overcome many of the challenges of current approaches to nanowire alignment.“It is believed that the synthesized alignment of metallic nanowires can be easily realized under normal conditions,” said Sun. “This technique will be very important for the process of industrial manufacturing. For example, this method can be used for the preparation of metallic nano-circuits, nanowire-grid polarizers, nanoscale photon crystals, nanoscale optical wave guides, and so on.”The scientists also project that an electric field could “sculpt” nanowire structures, drawing lines and shapes with a scanning tunneling microscope. Khadi has once again proved that despite all odds, its growth would not decelerate in any case.In the recently concluded 37th edition of India International Trade Fair (IITF) at Pragati Maidan, the Khadi and village industries recorded a growth of 19.38 percent in its average sale with respect to its sale in the 36th edition of IITF last year. And, this despite the fact that total space allotted to Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) this year was only 1400 sq meters, which was less than half of the 3000 sq meters space allotted last year. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe average sale in each stall of Khadi unit was recorded nearly Rs 5.53 lakh this year, which is higher than last year’s figure of around Rs 5 lakh. Similarly, in Village Industries unit, the average sale in each stall this year was nearly Rs 3.27 lakh, which is Rs 86,000 higher than last year’s figure of Rs 2.4 lakh.Due to crunch of adequate space, the KVIC could incorporate only 90 institutions on stalls in the 37th of IITF. Last year, the KVIC had allotted as many as 195 stalls of Khadi and Village Industries units. While the sales percentage in 2016 was 50.95 and 49.05 for Khadi and Village industries products respectively, it was 74.9 and 25.1 percent respectively for Khadi and Village industries products this year. Travelweek Group VANCOUVER — Canada Jetlines has added another two Canadian gateways to its proposed network: Kelowna International Airport (YLW) and Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (YWG).The ULCC, which says it’s on track to launch this summer, has reached agreements to provide flights from both airports. Agreements are subject to the completion of the airline licencing process and the receipt of applicable regulatory approvals.CEO Javier Suarez said that he expects Canadians in Winnipeg and Kelowna to travel more often as a result of Jetlines’ low fares.“Similarly, driven by these low fares, both markets should experience an increase in the number of tourists in their regions.
